Reference Point Youth Ministries

(A little explanation of the name)

Why not just call it "Youth Group?"  Well I heard this term "Reference Point" a couple of years ago in a video. The teacher mentioned the necessity of God being our Reference Point in all that we do.  If we stop and think about all the other people in life that could be our reference point, for instance famous athletes, movie stars, celebrities... we would have a pretty dark life if we tried to try our best to match up our life and look for guidance from someone that was far from perfect.  We must have God as our Reference Point. Do I think we have a chance of being perfect?  No!  God will perfect us once we pass on from this life and into eternity with Him.  We must set our sights high while on earth to live our lives in a way that would be pleasing to God.

Every activity we do as a youth group is important. When we have our youth leaders around the youth, we are building relationships. When we are in a controlled and safe setting, that is the time when the adults can influence the students in a positive way. Living life together as a group can teach us all many great lessons. Sometimes we learn the fun and easy way, sometimes we learn the hard and painful way. Our hope is that all of our lessons can direct us towards a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ.

Our ultimate goal for any student is to see spiritual growth which leads to a transformed life. We believe we have the setting that can take a student from wherever they may be coming from and be able to communicate the Gospel to them in a clear and understandable way. We teach God's Word not just to fill our students minds with knowledge, but with the hope that they will try to apply it to their lives.

Currently there are two mid-week events for you to attend:

On Tuesday's from 6:30- 8:00 pm we have a small group Bible study.  We have three leaders plus myself that show up every week and try our best to build relationships with the students and teach them what the word of God has for us.  This is done mostly by group discussions.  Sometimes there will be a video sometimes a fill in the blank worksheet.

This month of January we will be studying the importance of hanging out with other Christians.  Last night I introduced the process of leading a Bible Study using the S.P.A.C.E.P.E.T.S. method. This method can be used with a small group Bible Study or in a discipleship relationship.  In a nutshell I will explain spacepets.  This is an acronym that can be applied to basically any section of scripture.

S -Is there a Sin to confess?
P- Is there a Promise to claim?
A-Is there an Attitude to change?
C-Is there command to keep?
E-Is there an example to follow?
P-Is there a prayer to pray?
E-Is there an error to avoid?
T-Is there a Truth to believe?
S-Is there Something to thank God for?

Wednesday evenings we meet together with Newlife Youth.  We meet from 6:30 - 8:30 P.M.  This is a large gathering which really amps the energy level at church.  Between both groups, there are usually 50 to 60 youth at this gathering.  Usually more.  The first hour consists of singing, announcements and a message.  The second hour consists of small groups that are organized by grade.
The groups play games together and break down the message with a discussion.  This is where relationships are built between the students with each other and between the leaders and the students.

Important upcoming date:
Saturday, January 21st there will be a work party for the downstairs youth room  We have a lot to do down there and we are going to be getting help from those from Newlife youth as well.  Starts at 9:00 A.M.  Bring grubby clothes and work gloves.

Saturday February 4th we are going to make another trip to hand out warm clothes and toiletries to those who are in need.  We will be going to Tacoma this time with a trip to Tower Lanes afterwards to go play some putt putt golf.  What a great way to end a day of service.  It will cost $6.00 to play a round of 18 holes.

Youth Mission Trip 2012

We are taking sign-ups for our Mexico Mission Trip next year.  See Dave Horton if you would like to be a part of a cross cultural mission trip to build houses in Tijuana next June.  Approximate cost is $950.00.   We do some fundraisers as a group and some of the money is raised on your own.  There are plenty of ways to raise that much money if you get an early start, so don't let that be a block for you.   We will help you!!!  These sign ups are for all those that have any interest at all.  No final decision has to be made before January 21st, 2012.  At that time there will be a $50.00 non-refundable deposit due.

The cost of your trip pays for plane tickets and the mission trip itself.  This is a a trip for anyone entering 8th grade this coming Fall and older.  Adults are always needed as well.  Here is the link to get paperwork for the trip.  Please fill out the paper work and return it to me asap.  www.goincmissions.org

The trip promises to be a life changing event for all that can go.  Ask anyone!
